Tryout Preparation Tips

Tip #1: Skills (gymnastics, stunting, etc.) are very important to being a Maryland cheerleader, as with any college program; however, being a good cheer"leader" is also very important. We look for people that have the whole package. Therefore, tryout participants should make sure that their motions and presence are strong.

Tip #2: It's strongly recommended that tryout participants attend a College Prep Clinic hosted by the University of Maryland cheerleaders. The tryout material (dance, fight song, cheer, etc.) will be taught at the clinic; thus, all of the participants that attend the clinic will have several months to practice the material prior to live tryouts.

Tip #3: Be in exceptional physical shape (you should be running, weight training, etc. prior to tryouts).

Tip #4: Be prepared to throw your tumbling on a regular cheer mat. The Maryland cheerleaders cheer on grass and gym floor, in addition, the NCA College National Championship is on a regular cheer floor. Therefore, the skills that you can do on a spring floor are no longer relevant in college. Please be mentally prepared for that change.

Requirements
Medical
All tryout participants MUST have the following documentation in order to try out.
  • Documentation, from a physician, of a physical examination within six (6) months prior to tryouts that clears the participant for participation in intercollegiate athletics, AND;
  • Documentation of sickle cell trait status. Tests are typically completed at birth (see pediatrician for results). You can also get the test from your current doctor or the University Health Center (keep in mind that results can take up to 10 days to obtain and you must have the results to tryout), AND;
  • Have proof of valid personal/primary health insurance that provides coverage for intercollegiate athletic participation.
Minimum Skill Requirements
Tryout participants are evaluated on all aspects of cheerleading to include cheer"leading" ability, physical fitness, gymnastics, stunt position, stunt ability, attitude, and performance ability. The minimum gymnastics requirements are as follows:

Female Bases and Back-spots
A standing tuck is required for all female bases/backs. Round-off backhanding full twisting layouts are encouraged for the running tumbling section, but are not a requirement for trying out.

Female Flyers
At standing back-handspring is the minimum gymnastics requirement for all female flyers to try out. Advanced/elite standing and running tumbling passes are recommended, but are not required for petite flyers with elite flying skills.

Males
No tumbling experience is required for males, but encouraged. We are willing to teach athletic guys who are willing to learn.

Tryout Eligibility
Tryouts are open to incoming and current University of Maryland undergraduate and graduate students. High school seniors who are not accepted until the spring semester of their freshman year are permitted to try out as long as they are planning to participate in the "Freshman Connection" program for the upcoming fall semester. You do not have to know your acceptance status in order to tryout.
