    SCORING/SELECTION PROCESS

Participants will be scored by a panel of judges on the “tryout requirements” listed above.   The 2007-2008 Spirit Squad members will be selected based on the judge’s score, AS WELL AS, the need for specific stunting/tumbling positions, the participant’s interview, as well as the behavior, attitude and performance from the previous season (applies to returning MD Cheerleaders only).  The judging panel will consist of former MD Cheer coaches, Alumni MD Cheerleaders, and other respected knowledgeable members of the cheerleading community.

    TRYOUT ATTIRE

    Females

During the tryout process, female participants should wear a sports bra, cheer shorts and cheer shoes.  On the last day (formal tryout day), female participants should wear a dark sports bra and shorts (black preferred), as well as "full game day hair and make-up".  Game day hair consists of fully curled hair, worn half-up/half-down with a red bow.  Game day make-up consists of a full face of make-up to include foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, blush, and red lipstick... think performance make-up.  For eye make-up, use natural colors, applied liberally... you don't want to use all-star like make-up such as heavy glitter.  Further explanation will be given during the first day of tryouts.

    Males

Males should wear a white t-shirt and dark shorts.

    TRYOUT PREPARATION PROCESS

ü      Tryout participants will want to make sure that they are in top physical condition.  The University of Maryland Cheerleaders participate in a regular cardiovascular routine and lift weights.  Being in the best possible shape will improve your skills and decrease the risk of injury.

ü     All participants will want to advance and perfect their gymnastics skills prior to tryouts.

ü    Flyers should make sure that they stretch! Flexibility is a very important part of the flyer’s score sheet.

SPIRIT SQUAD- VIDEO TRYOUT INFORMATION

It is STRONGLY recommended that participants tryout in person, however, video tryouts are available.  Video tryouts must be received prior to the live tryouts held on May 2-4, 2008.  If you need to tryout by video, please follow these steps to submit your tryout entry:

Step #1: Write a letter to the coaching staff explaining why you cannot attend the tryouts held on May 3-4, 2008.  You will need to include this letter with your video.

Step #2: Complete the entire 2008-2009 Tryout Application, medical information sheet, and waiver forms.

Step #3: Video tape the skills below.  Make sure that you are dressed in appropriate tryout attire: females should be in a sports bra and cheer shorts, with full hair and make-up, as if you were trying out in person;   Males should wear an athletic shirt and shorts.  Please make sure that your VHS video tape or DVD is labeled with your name, telephone number, and email address.

    FEMALE VIDEO CONTENT

STANDING AND RUNNING TUMBLING: You may show as many standing and running tumbling skills as you want…. Since you are not trying out in person, the more we know about you the better.  For example, someone with a standing tuck may want to start by demonstrating their standing handspring, then show their standing tuck, toe-touch tuck, etc.  You should show all the skills that you write on your application.  All tumbling skills should be performed on a non-spring floor surface with shoes on; this is because our live tryouts are held on a regular cheer mat, all of our games are on hard surfaces, and the NCA college nationals are held on a regular cheer floor.  Therefore, your tumbling skills will be based off of your ability to throw them on a regular cheer floor.  If you show skills without shoes, or on a spring floor surface, it will be taken into consideration by the judges.

DANCE: Show 4 or more 8-counts of any dance.  You do not need to make up this dance; it can be from one of your routines.  **Judges Tip** Judges will be looking for sharp, crisp motions, performed at a fast pace, while still exemplifying rhythm and dance ability.  Make sure you smile and use genuine facial expressions… look like you are having fun.

CHEER: Show a cheer or chant.  You do not need to make up a cheer; it can be one of your high school cheers or from an all-star routine.  **Judges Tip** Judges will be looking for sharp, crisp motions executed with proper technique.  Make sure you smile and use genuine facial expressions… look like you are having fun.  Make sure your voice is strong and confident.

JUMPS: Demonstrate 3 consecutive jumps.  1 of the 3 jumps MUST be a toe-touch.  The other 2 jumps can be toe-touches, or you can perform other advanced jumps.  **Judges Tip** You will be scored on proper technique and the height of your jump.  Make sure your motion technique is strong during your jump approach and make sure you toes are pointed.

STUNTS: You should demonstrate at least two stunting skills.  If you can perform combination stunts or creative stunts, you should show them.  If you can perform multiple positions, for example, if you can base and fly, or base and back spot, demonstrate it on your video.  Flyers, you do not have to co-ed stunt for your video.  The University of Maryland Spirit Squad is a small co-ed team, therefore, most flyers, especially rookies, will all-girl stunt their first year.  **Judges Tip** The judges will not be looking at whether or not you are co-ed or all-girl stunting, they will be looking at your flexibility, flying and twisting technique.  Flyers, if you do not have a strong enough stunt group to demonstrate your flexibility, than show it on the ground.  Flyers that can demonstrate the following skills will be scored the highest: heel stretch, bow-in arrow, scale, scorpion and arabesque.   Flyers that can double twist dismount will be scored higher.  Bases, judges are looking to make sure that you use your legs when executing your stunt, provide a strong pop for the dismount, and that you catch high and absorb on your cradle.

INTERVIEW: Tell us a little bit about yourself! J  **Judges Tip** Don’t read us your cheer resume… For example, you don’t need to tell us that you were the captain of your team… most of the girls trying out were captains of their high school or all-star team.  Tell us something interesting about yourself and/or your family, something that is completely unrelated to cheerleading, that will make the judges remember you.

    MALE VIDEO CONTENT

STANDING AND RUNNING TUMBLING: Gymnastics is not a requirement for males, however, having gymnastics skills is definitely desired.  If you have any standing or running tumbling skills please demonstrate them on your video.

STUNTS: You should demonstrate at least two of you most difficult stunting skills.

INTERVIEW: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Step #4:  Mail your letter, tryout application, medical forms and video to:

    University of Maryland Cheerleading
    c/o Jamie Little
    524 Casey Lane
    Rockville, MD 20850

Step #5: Call or e-mail Coach Jamie Little (JamieS4@aol.com, 202-438-0499) to verify that your application and tryout video have been received.

Step #6: Tryout results will be posted by Monday, May 5, 2008 at www.marylandcheerleading.com by 9:00 AM.  Participants that make the 2008-2009 University of Maryland Spirit Squad must attend the mandatory meeting and physical.
